Book 26, Question 68

How does a key open a lock?

Inside most locks is a row of small pins of different lengths.

A key has bumps and cuts that push each pin to just the right height so they line up along a line. Then the lock's cylinder can turn. The wrong key leaves some pins in the way. Pin locks were first made in Egypt, and Linus Yale Jr. improved the design in the 1860s.
