Book 25, Question 129

Why do some cities have a grid of streets and others wind around?

A grid is easy to plan, easy to map, and easy to divide into building lots, so many cities, like Toronto and Chicago, use it.

Winding streets often grew from old paths, hills, rivers, and coastlines in places like old European towns. Grids make it simple to find your way, while curves can slow cars and add charm. Each pattern has good points.
