Book 25, Question 89

How do trees survive in tiny squares of dirt in the sidewalk?

City trees have a tough life.

They have little room for roots, the soil is often packed hard, and salt from winter roads can harm them. Planners now use special loose soil under the pavement and long planting strips. Mulch and water help. Many cities have crews who water and prune young trees. A tree with room for roots grows better and lives longer.
