Book 25, Question 23
How do engineers know how much weight a floor can hold?
Engineers calculate the weight of the building itself, plus people, furniture, and equipment, and then multiply it by a safety factor so the floor is much stronger than it needs to be.
Signs in libraries and storage rooms tell you the maximum weight. Floors are made of strong concrete and steel. Testing in labs checks the numbers.
