Book 24, Question 52
How do roots sense where gravity is pulling?
Roots grow downward because of gravity. In the tip of each root are tiny, heavy grains called statoliths that settle to the low side of the cells. This tells the root which way is down, and the root bends that way. Shoots do the opposite and bend upward.
