Book 24, Question 51
What jobs do roots do for a plant?
Roots have several jobs. They anchor the plant so wind and rain don't knock it over. They take in water and minerals from the soil. Many roots also store food, like sugar and starch, for later.
More fun facts
- The main jobs of roots are to soak up water and nutrients, anchor the plant, hold up the stem and store food.
- Some plants also use their roots to make new plants.
- Behind the growing tip, root cells take in water and get longer, pushing the root tip through the soil.
- Tubes in the center of a root carry food and water.
- Climbing plants such as orchids grow aerial roots that grab onto things and soak up water from the air.
- How fertile the soil is and its pH help decide how fast and how deep roots grow.

Questions kids ask
Do roots need air?
Yes. A lack of oxygen in the soil slows root growth and means the plant takes up less water and nutrients.
