Book 24, Question 39
How does a groundhog survive winter in its burrow?
A groundhog eats a lot in the summer and fall to build up body fat. Then it goes into a deep burrow below the frost line and hibernates. Its heartbeat slows down to just a few beats a minute, and its body temperature drops close to that of the soil. It lives on stored fat until spring, when it wakes up and comes out.
