Book 10, Question 120
Why Keep Tetanus Shots Updated?
We keep tetanus shots updated because tetanus bacteria live in dirt and can cause serious illness. The vaccine trains your body to defend against them, before you ever meet them. Boosters refresh that memory so protection lasts for years.
More fun facts
- Tetanus is caused by bacteria called Clostridium tetani, which are common in soil.
- The bacteria usually get into the body through wounds that break the skin, like stepping on a dirty nail.
- Tetanus bacteria release a strong toxin that stops the nervous system from working normally.
- The disease causes painful muscle stiffness, including its well known symptom, lockjaw.
- Once the toxin takes hold, there is no cure, so doctors can only help the body until it clears the toxin.
- Adults need a tetanus booster shot every 10 years to stay protected.
