Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are some foods choking hazards?

The Big Idea

Some foods are choking hazards because they are round, hard, or sticky and can block a small airway! Think of whole grapes, nuts, and hard candy. Sitting down and chewing well keeps eating safe.

Small Airways

Step one: small airways. The tube that carries air to your lungs is called the windpipe, and it is quite narrow, especially for little kids. A round food can fit snugly and block it.

Risky Shapes

Step two: risky shapes. Whole grapes, nuts, hard candy, popcorn, and chunks of hot dog are common hazards. Foods like these are safer cut up small, and some are not right for little kids.

Eat Safely

Step three: eat safely. Sit down to eat, chew well, and do not run, laugh, or talk with food in your mouth. If someone chokes, shout for a grown-up and call 911 right away.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at safer eating! Sit down at the table. Take small bites and chew well. A grown-up cuts round foods into small pieces. If someone chokes, shout for a grown-up and call 911.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A first-aid course teaches grown-ups and older kids how to help someone who is choking. Slow, mindful chewing helps you taste more, too. Little kids need extra care with certain foods. If anyone is struggling to breathe while eating, shout for a grown-up right away.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Practice slow, mindful chewing at your next snack. Count how many chews each bite takes. Ask a grown-up about a first-aid course. Ask a grown-up about a first-aid course.
