Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why cook burgers to a safe temperature?

The Big Idea

We cook burgers to a safe temperature because germs can hide inside ground meat! When meat is ground up, germs from the surface get mixed all the way through. A food thermometer is the only way to be sure the middle got hot enough.

Germs Mixed Inside

Step one: germs mixed inside. A steak has germs mostly on the outside, which a hot pan can reach. In ground beef, the grinding mixes them through the whole patty.

Heat Kills Germs

Step two: heat kills germs. Germs die when the middle of the food gets hot enough for long enough. That is 71 degrees Celsius for ground beef, and 74 for chicken.

Check, Do Not Guess

Step three: check, do not guess. A burger can look brown but still be too cool inside, so color alone cannot tell you. A grown-up puts a thermometer in the thickest part to read the true temperature.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at safe temperatures! Ground beef should reach 71 degrees Celsius, or 160 Fahrenheit. Chicken should reach 74 degrees Celsius, or 165 Fahrenheit. A food thermometer reads the middle. And a grown-up does the cooking.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Color alone can lie, but temperature tells the truth. Wash the thermometer between uses. Rest cooked meat for a minute, then check again. Stoves and hot pans are for grown-ups only.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Watch a grown-up use a meat thermometer once. Ask them to show you the safe temperature. Notice where the thermometer goes. Remember, the thermometer goes in the thickest part.

Outro

A thermometer tells us when burgers are truly safe to eat. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
