Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do ‘food miles’ matter to some families?

The Big Idea

Food miles matter to some families because they measure how far food travels to reach you! More distance can mean more fuel use and more pollution. Local, seasonal food can lower miles, but farming methods matter too.

Counting Miles

Step one: counting miles. Food miles add up the distance food travels from where it grows to your plate. A carrot from a nearby farm travels much less than a mango from across the world.

Fuel Use

Step two: fuel use. Trucks, ships, and planes burn fuel, which adds gases to the air. Shorter trips can mean less fuel used for each bite.

More Than Miles

Step three: more than miles. How the food was grown matters too, such as heating a greenhouse or using lots of water. A faraway food grown in a gentle way can be a better choice than a nearby food that needs lots of energy.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at food miles! A local farm means a short trip. Eating in season often means less energy to grow. Faraway foods add variety but travel farther. So families weigh all of the clues together.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Miles are one clue, not the only clue. Seasonal food often tastes best too. Farmers markets can help you find local food. Wash all produce, and ask a grown-up before tasting.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Plan a mostly local snack from your region. What grows near you right now? Make a list and share it. Then share your list with your family.

Outro

Food miles are one clue about food, but farming methods matter too. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
