Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why thank plants at dinner?

The Big Idea

We thank plants at dinner because plants turn sunlight into food! Leaves, roots, seeds, and fruits all come from plants making food through photosynthesis, a word that means putting together with light. That means every bite is bottled sunshine, and plants deserve a thank you.

Plants Catch Sunlight

Step one: plants catch sunlight. Green leaves hold chlorophyll, which catches light energy from the sun. Plants are the main food makers on land, because they can use sunshine directly. Animals cannot.

Photosynthesis

Step two: photosynthesis. Using light, a plant mixes water from the soil with carbon dioxide from the air. It makes sugar for energy, and releases oxygen for us to breathe. It is a very clever recipe.

Plants Become Dinner

Step three: plants become dinner. The plant stores its sugar energy in roots, leaves, seeds, and fruits. Even meat and milk start with plants, because animals eat them.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the plant parts on our plates! Carrots are roots that grow under the soil. Lettuce and spinach are leaves that face the sun. Apples are fruits. And sunflower seeds and beans are seeds.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Plants are solar chefs. Plants also give us the oxygen we breathe, and food for animals too. Farmers, rain, soil, and bees help plants grow too. It is kind to say thank you before a meal.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! At your next meal, name one plant part you ate. Was it a root, a leaf, a fruit, or a seed? Say thank you to the plant! And say thank you to the plant!
