Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why rotate crops on farms?

The Big Idea

Farmers rotate crops, which means they grow different plants in a field each year! Different plants take and give back different nutrients, and they face different pests. Rotation keeps the soil healthier and the crops stronger, year after year.

Different Appetites

Step one: different appetites. Corn uses lots of nitrogen, a nutrient plants need to grow green and strong. If corn grows in the same spot every year, the soil gets worn out.

Helpers Return Nutrients

Step two: helpers return nutrients. Beans and peas partner with soil microbes that turn nitrogen from the air into plant food. So growing beans after corn puts nutrients back.

Pest Cycles Break

Step three: pest cycles break. Many pests love one kind of plant, so they wait in the soil for it to come back. If the crop changes, the pests have nothing to eat, and their numbers drop without extra spraying.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a rotation plan! In year one, the field grows corn. In year two, it grows beans that refill the soil. In year three, it grows wheat. Then the cycle starts all over again.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Diversity protects dirt. Farmers sometimes plant cover crops to protect soil in winter. Rotation can mean fewer chemicals are needed to fight pests. Soil is full of life, so wash your hands after gardening.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a cartoon of a three-year crop rotation. Show a field with a different crop each year. Add arrows to show the cycle. Finish with a happy farmer waving at the end!
