Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why sprout seeds on a windowsill?

The Big Idea

We sprout seeds on a windowsill to watch a plant wake up! A seed holds a tiny baby plant called an embryo, plus stored food. Warmth, water, and air tell it that it is time to grow.

Wake Up Signals

Step one: wake-up signals. A seed stays asleep until it gets warmth, moisture, and air. Then it soaks up water and swells until its coat splits open.

Roots Go Down

Step two: roots go down. The first thing to come out is a little root that grows down to find water. It uses the seed's stored food for energy, like a packed lunch.

Shoots Reach Up

Step three: shoots reach up. Then a shoot pushes up toward the light and opens tiny leaves. Once the leaves make food from sunshine, the plant no longer needs its lunch.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at sprouting! First, the seed drinks water and swells. Next, the root grows down. Then the shoot rises toward the light. And finally, the first leaves open.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Sprouting is plant birth you can watch. Beans often sprout in just a few days. Raw sprouts can carry germs, so do not eat your windowsill sprouts. Wash your hands after touching damp seeds and soil.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Wet a paper towel and put a few bean seeds in a clear bag with it. Tape it to a sunny window and look each day. Draw what you see, but do not eat the sprouts. Draw a picture each day to see the growth.

Outro

Warmth, water, and air wake up seeds so you can watch a plant begin. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
