Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do apples float?
The Big Idea
Apples float because they have tiny pockets of air inside! That air makes an apple less dense than water, so water pushes it up. Bobbing for apples at a party is really density science.
Air Pockets
Step one: air pockets. Between an apple's cells are tiny spaces filled with air. In many apples, about one quarter of the fruit is air, which is why apples are so light and crisp.
What Is Density?
Step two: what is density? Density tells you how much stuff is packed into a space. If something is less dense than water, it floats. If it is denser, it sinks.
Water Pushes Up
Step three: water pushes up. Water pushes up on anything in it, and this push is called buoyancy. An apple is light for its size, so the push is enough to hold it up at the surface.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at floating! An apple floats because of all its tiny air spaces. A potato is dense and packed, so it usually sinks. Air makes a fruit lighter for its size. And water pushes up on both of them.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Floaters are not magic, they are airy. Some apples sink a little when they have fewer air spaces. Cranberries float too, so farmers flood the bogs to harvest them. Keep all water play near a grown-up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Fill a clean sink or bowl with water. Test an apple and a potato. Which floats, which sinks, and why? Then explain why one floats and one sinks.
