Why Is Your Tongue Covered in Tiny Bumps?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is your tongue covered in tiny bumps?

The Big Idea

Your tongue is covered in tiny bumps called papillae, pah-PILL-ee! Some help grip food, and some hold taste buds. So your tongue is both a grabber and a taster.

Bumps Everywhere

Step one: look at the bumps. Your tongue is covered with thousands of tiny bumps called papillae. They make your tongue feel a little rough, and they help you feel textures.

Grippy Bumps

Step two: some bumps are grippy. The most common bumps are thread-shaped and have no taste buds. They help your tongue grip food and move it around while you chew, a bit like a tiny brush.

Taste Bump

Step three: other bumps taste. The mushroom-shaped bumps, and some larger ones toward the back, hold your taste buds. Each taste bud has tiny cells that notice sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Your tongue is a strong muscle covered with bumps. The small pink dots near the tip hold taste buds. Taste buds send signals to your brain. And the grippy bumps help move food.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A tongue has thousands of taste buds. Taste cells are replaced about every one or two weeks. A cat's tongue has extra hooked bumps for grooming. Brush your tongue gently with your toothbrush to keep it clean.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Use a mirror to look at the bumps on your tongue. Find the small pink dots near the tip. Draw what you see. Wash your hands first, and be gentle.
