Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does food taste blander on an airplane?

The Big Idea

Food tastes blander on an airplane because the dry, low-pressure cabin air dulls your senses! It dulls your sense of smell and makes taste buds less sensitive. Airlines often use bolder seasoning to make up for it.

Dry Air

Step one: the air is very dry. Airplane cabin air is much drier than the air at home, so your nose and mouth dry out. Dry noses are not as good at catching smells, and smell is most of flavor.

Low Pressure

Step two: the pressure is lower. The air pressure in a plane is like being on a tall mountain, which can make taste buds less sensitive. Studies found sweet and salty tastes seem weaker in flight.

Bold Flavors

Step three: cooks add more flavor. Airline chefs often season foods more strongly so they taste normal in the air. Loud engine noise can also turn down how you notice flavor, so everything seems quieter and plainer.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Dry air dries out your nose. Lower pressure makes taste buds less sensitive. Engine noise distracts your senses too. So the meal seems bland.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Tomato juice is a favorite on planes, because umami is less affected. Sweet and salty tastes seem weaker in the air. Flavor tastes normal again when you land. Drink water on trips, and ask a grown-up before trying new foods.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Ask a grown-up who has flown if the meals tasted different. What did they notice up high? Ask if they added salt or sauces. Write down what you learn.

Outro

Thin, dry air turns down flavor. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
