Why Does Metal Feel Colder than Wood in the Same Room?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does metal feel colder than wood in the same room?

The Big Idea

Metal feels colder than wood because metal pulls heat out of your hand much faster! Both can be exactly the same temperature as the room. Wood is an insulator, so it pulls heat away slowly and feels warmer.

Hand Is Warm

Step one: your hand is warm. Your skin is around 33 degrees Celsius, which is warmer than a room. So when you touch something, heat flows from your hand into it.

Metal Conducts

Step two: metal is a conductor. Metal carries heat away from your fingers very quickly. Your skin loses warmth fast, and your brain says, cold!

Wood Insulates

Step three: wood is an insulator. Wood passes heat along slowly, so your fingers stay warm. That is why wood feels cozier, even at the very same temperature.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Your hand is the warm one. The metal spoon drains heat from it quickly. The wooden spoon drains heat slowly. Yet both spoons are the same temperature as the room.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Your hand senses how fast heat leaves, not the true temperature. A tile floor feels colder than a rug in the same room, for the same reason. Cooks stir hot pots with wooden spoons, since wood does not heat up fast. Never touch hot pans or stoves, because metal pans can burn you fast.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Take a metal spoon and a wooden spoon from the same drawer. Touch each one with your fingers. Which one feels colder? Tell a friend why, even though they are the same temperature.

Feel is not always the true temperature. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
