Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some images use false color?

The Big Idea

Some images use false color because scientists map invisible light to colours we can see! They also boost contrasts, so that hidden structures pop out. False color is a translation, not fake news. It is like turning a song into sheet music!

Invisible Light

Step one: invisible light. Telescopes detect infrared, X-rays, radio, and other light that our eyes cannot see. A camera records them only as numbers or shades of grey, because there is no real colour to show.

Assign Colors

Step two: assign colours. Scientists pick a colour for each band of light, such as red for the longest waves and blue for the shortest. Then they stack the layers into one picture.

Make It Pop

Step three: make it pop. They can also brighten faint parts so that structures such as clouds, jets, and ridges stand out. Now the data becomes a picture that people can understand and enjoy.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The invisible light is what the telescope detects. The data records how strong it is, in each place. Scientists choose colours to show it. The final image is a translation of the data.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Color can be a data language. False color is not fake. It is a careful translation. Many space pictures use filters for different elements, like hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur. Captions often explain which filters made the colours.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, be a detective! Read the caption of a space image. Which filters made the colours? Which colour stands for which light? Write down what you learn. Then share it with a friend.

Outro

Colors can speak the language of data. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
