Why Do Many Telescopes Sit Inside Domes with a Slot That Opens?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do many telescopes sit inside domes with a slot that opens?

The Big Idea

Many telescopes sit inside domes to stay safe, and the slot opens so they can see the sky! A dome protects a telescope from wind, rain, and dust. The slot opens so the telescope can see the sky. The whole dome turns so the slot follows wherever the telescope points.

A Protective Shell

Step one: the dome protects the telescope. Telescopes have delicate mirrors and machinery. A dome keeps out wind, rain, and dust. Many domes are painted white to keep the inside cool.

A Slot Opens

Step two: a slot opens in the roof. At night, a long slot slides open, so the telescope can look at the sky. When it's cloudy or windy, the slot closes. The telescope only sees what the slot shows.

The Dome Turns

Step three: the whole dome turns. Telescopes point at different places in the sky, so the dome rotates to keep the slot lined up. Motors turn the dome slowly and smoothly.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The dome covers the whole telescope. A slot slides open in the roof. The telescope points through the slot. The dome turns to keep up.

Quick Facts

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a dome with a sliding slot. Show with arrows how it turns toward a star. Add the telescope inside. Show a grown-up your drawing.
