Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do spectroscopy rainbows reveal star recipes?

The Big Idea

Spectroscopy rainbows reveal star recipes, because gases leave fingerprint lines in starlight! When you spread starlight into a rainbow, dark or bright lines appear. Decode the lines, and you learn which elements are in the star. It is like reading a recipe from far away.

Split the Light

Step one: split the light. A prism or a special grating spreads light into a rainbow of colours. A tool that does this is called a spectrograph. Say it with me: SPEK-tro-graf.

Find the Lines

Step two: find the lines. Every element, such as hydrogen or sodium, makes its own special pattern of lines. No two elements share the same fingerprint, just like people.

Read the Recipe

Step three: read the recipe. Astronomers match the lines to known patterns. That shows what a faraway star is made of, even though no one can visit it.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Starlight carries clues from far away. A prism spreads the light apart. The rainbow is called a spectrum, and more than one are called spectra. The lines inside are barcodes for chemistry.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Rainbow barcodes of chemistry. Helium was first found in the Sun's light, before it was found on Earth. Spectra also show a star's temperature and how fast it is moving toward us or away from us. Never look at the Sun, even to make a rainbow of it.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, split some light! Look at an indoor fluorescent light through a diffraction glasses toy. Notice the colourful bands and lines on each side of the light. That is a mini spectrum. Never use it to look at the Sun.

Starlight is full of secret messages. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
