Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do your eyes need 20 minutes to see the stars well?

The Big Idea

Your eyes need 20 minutes to see the stars well because they slowly switch to night mode! In the dark, your eyes take about 20 minutes to become much more sensitive to light. A white flash resets it. That is why astronomers use dim red flashlights.

Bright Light Shrinks Pupils

Step one: in bright light, your pupils shrink. The dark circle in the middle of your eye gets small to let in less light. Your eyes are in day mode. That works well when it's bright.

Slow Switch to Night Mode

Step two: in the dark, your eyes slowly switch. Your pupils open wide, and the light catchers in the back of your eyes become much more sensitive. This takes about 20 minutes. Each minute, you see more stars.

Red Light Protects

Step three: a white flash resets your night vision. Looking at a bright screen or a white flashlight undoes the change. A dim red light bothers your eyes much less. Astronomers protect their night vision on purpose.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! In bright light, pupils are small. In the dark, pupils open wide. Full night mode takes about 20 minutes. A dim red flashlight keeps it from resetting.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Night vision takes about 20 minutes to build. A white flash resets it. Astronomers use dim red flashlights. Always stargaze with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up nearby, stay outside in the dark for 20 minutes, without screens. Notice how many more stars appear. Use a red flashlight if you need light. Tell a grown-up what you saw.
