Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are many top telescopes on mountains?

The Big Idea

Many top telescopes are on mountains because the air up high is thinner, drier, and steadier! Higher, darker sites sit above much of the blurry, wet air and the glow of city lights. Clearer, steadier views win. That is why astronomers climb high!

Above the Blur

Step one: above the blur. Starlight must pass through our air, and moving air makes stars twinkle and blur. On a high mountain, there is less air above the telescope to blur the view.

Dry Skies

Step two: dry skies. Water vapour and clouds block some kinds of light, especially infrared. Dry mountain tops let more of that light come through to the telescope.

Far from City Lights

Step three: far from city glow. Cities fill the night with light that washes out faint stars. Remote mountains stay dark, so faint galaxies and thousands of stars show up clearly.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A high peak lifts the telescope above much of our air. Thin air means less blur and steadier stars. Dry air means less water to block the light. A dark sky means fainter things can be seen.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Altitude helps astronomy. Maunakea in Hawaii is about 4,200 metres high. The Canary Islands in Spain also host big telescopes, on tall volcano peaks. Mountain trips need warm clothes and grown-up planning.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, be a detective! Name a famous mountain observatory. You could pick Maunakea or the Canary Islands. Find out how high it is, in metres. Compare that to where you live.

Mountains give astronomers a front-row seat. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
