Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do comets have nuclei that look dark and lumpy?

The Big Idea

Comet nuclei look dark and lumpy because they are dusty, rocky ices shaped by jets and time! Close-up photos from spacecraft show that they are not shiny ice cubes at all. A dirty snowball can look more like a charcoal space potato!

Dusty Ice

Step one: dusty ice. A comet nucleus is ice mixed with dust, rock, and dark carbon-rich material. That dark stuff makes it reflect very little light, so it is nearly as dark as charcoal.

Jets of Gas

Step two: jets of gas. When sunlight warms the ice, jets of gas burst out through cracks and holes. Over time, these jets sculpt pits, cliffs, and bumpy shapes.

Close-Up Photos

Step three: photos from space. Spacecraft that visited comets sent back pictures of dark, rough, lumpy worlds. Some comets even look like two lumps stuck together, like a cosmic peanut.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Ice is hidden inside and just under the surface. Dark dust covers the outside like soot. Jets of gas spray out and wear the surface. The shape ends up lumpy, bumpy, and wonderfully weird.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Comet nuclei aren't shiny ice cubes. The Rosetta mission visited comet 67P. Comet 67P looks like two lumps joined together. A nucleus is usually only a few kilometres wide.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, be a detective! Browse a Rosetta photo of comet 67P with a grown-up. Look closely at the cliffs, rocks, pits, and bumps. What does the shape remind you of? Draw it in your notebook, bumps and all.
