Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why might icy moons hide oceans?

The Big Idea

Icy moons might hide oceans because a giant planet's pull can flex them and make heat inside! That inner warmth can melt some of the ice deep down. So under a thick ice shell, there may be a hidden ocean of liquid water.

Giant Planet Pulls

Step one: a giant planet pulls. A moon's path around its planet is not perfectly round, so the pull gets stronger and weaker. The moon is stretched and squeezed a little again and again.

Flexing Makes Heat

Step two: flexing makes heat. When something bends back and forth, friction warms it up. This is called tidal heating, and it can melt ice deep inside the moon.

Hidden Ocean

Step three: a hidden ocean. The melted water can form an ocean far below the frozen surface. The thick ice shell on top works like a lid, keeping the ocean sealed in.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The giant planet's gravity does the tugging. The icy moon gets stretched and squeezed. That flexing makes heat deep inside. A hidden ocean may sit below the ice lid.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Tidal flexing can heat an icy moon's inside. Europa's ice shell may be many kilometres thick. Scientists think hidden oceans may exist on several moons. Spacecraft help us find out more.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, try a tiny experiment! Squish a soft stress ball again and again. Then feel it with your fingers. Does it feel a little warm? Moons flex in a similar way, but on a much bigger scale. It is only a small comparison, but it helps!

Outro

Under the ice, there might be an ocean. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
