Why Do Mission Control Teams Work in Shifts?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do mission control teams work in shifts?

The Big Idea

Mission control teams work in shifts because spaceflight runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! Teams hand off to each other so someone is always watching the systems, the science, and the needs of the astronauts. Spacecraft never take a night off, so neither do the teams on Earth. Earth stays awake for orbit!

Always On

Step one: always on. A spacecraft keeps flying around the clock, in daytime and nighttime. Problems can pop up at any hour, so someone must always be ready. A sleepy team could miss something important.

Shift Teams

Step two: teams in shifts. Controllers work a set number of hours, then another team takes over. Everyone is rested, alert, and ready to spot issues. That's how teams keep sharp, even during a long mission.

The Handoff

Step three: handoffs. At each shift change, the old team briefs the new team on what's happening. Notes and checklists make sure nothing gets missed. It's like passing a baton in a relay race.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at mission control! Screens show the spacecraft's health. Headsets connect controllers to astronauts and each other. Checklists guide every step. And handoffs share the news with the next team!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! NASA's mission control is in Houston, Texas. Controllers have special jobs, such as flight director. The station crew follows Greenwich time, called UTC. Teams sit in front of many screens.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Design a three-shift schedule for a pretend mission day. Give each team eight hours. Write what each team does. Who tells the next team what happened?
