Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do astronauts exercise every day in space?
The Big Idea
Astronauts exercise every day in space because without Earth's usual gravity load, bones and muscles weaken. Workouts fight that, so bodies stay stronger for the trip home. They exercise about two hours every day. Exercise is orbit medicine!
No Heavy Lifting
Step one: no load. On Earth, gravity makes our bones and muscles work all day, just to stand and walk. In orbit, floating means they have almost nothing to hold up.
Weaker Bones
Step two: weaker bones. Without work, bones can lose about one percent of their strength every month. Muscles shrink, too, especially in the legs and back, because they aren't used much.
Space Gym
Step three: a space gym. Astronauts use a treadmill, a bike, and a weight machine, all strapped down so they stay put. Springs and straps give them something to push against, so it feels like real effort.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at the space gym! The treadmill has straps so astronauts do not float away. The bike works the legs and the heart. The weight machine uses vacuum cylinders and not heavy weights. All of it keeps bones and muscles strong!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Astronauts exercise about two hours every day. They can lose bone strength about 1 percent per month. After returning, they spend time getting used to gravity again. Do squats carefully, on a flat floor, with a grown-up nearby.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Do 20 careful squats on a flat floor. Feel the gravity workout in your legs. Astronauts miss this work in orbit. Stop if anything hurts, and have a grown-up nearby.
