Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are communications satellites often parked high above the equator?

The Big Idea

Communications satellites are often parked high above the equator because in a geostationary orbit, a satellite matches Earth's spin and seems to hover over one spot! That's perfect for TV dishes, which can stay aimed at one place in the sky. Hovering is matched spinning, and it works wonderfully!

Very High Up

Step one: very high. Geostationary satellites orbit about 36,000 kilometres above the equator. That's far higher than the space station, which is only about 400 kilometres up.

Matching the Spin

Step two: matching Earth. At that height, it takes the satellite exactly 24 hours to go around once. That's the same time Earth takes to spin, so they move in step.

A Fixed Spot

Step three: hovering. From the ground, the satellite looks like it's staying in one spot in the sky. A dish can aim at it and never have to move, so your TV signal stays steady.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Earth turns once a day, west to east. The satellite circles once a day too. A dish on the ground points at it. And TV shows arrive clearly!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Arthur C. Clarke imagined this idea in 1945. Geostationary satellites carry TV, weather, and phone signals. Signals take about a quarter of a second to go up and back. Look for dishes from the ground, and never climb roofs.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Find a satellite dish near your home. Look at which way it points. Many dishes in the same area face the same part of the sky. Stay safely on the ground!

Outro

Some satellites hover over one place. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
