Why Do Astronauts Grow a Little Taller in Space?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do astronauts grow a little taller in space?

The Big Idea

Astronauts grow a little taller in space because gravity stops squeezing their spines! Without gravity squeezing down, the cushions between the bones of the spine spread out. Astronauts can grow about 3 percent taller. They shrink back after they return home.

Gravity Squeezes

Step one: on Earth, gravity squeezes you a little. Gravity pulls your body down, so the soft cushions between your spine bones get compressed during the day. You are slightly shorter at bedtime than in the morning.

Floating Spines

Step two: in space, the squeeze is gone. With no gravity pushing down, those cushions between the bones expand, and the spine gets longer. Astronauts can grow about 3 percent taller.

Back to Normal

Step three: back on Earth, gravity squeezes again. Once astronauts come home, the cushions compress, and they shrink back to their usual height within a short time. It's a temporary growth spurt.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Your spine has bones with soft cushions between them. On Earth, gravity squeezes those cushions. In space, the cushions spread out. The spine gets a little longer.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Microgravity gives astronauts a temporary growth spurt. They can grow about 3 percent taller. They shrink back after returning home. Space suits must be fitted carefully.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Measure your height right after waking. Measure it again at bedtime. Are you a little shorter at night? Gravity squeezes you a little during the day!

In space, even your spine gets to stretch out. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
