Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do scientists still discover new small worlds?
The Big Idea
Scientists still discover new small worlds because telescopes and sky surveys keep getting better! Icy bodies in the outer solar system are dim and far away, so they hide until light, timing, or shadows reveal them. Our map of the solar system is still growing. There are still surprises to find!
Dim and Distant
Step one: hard to see. Small icy worlds in the outer solar system get very little sunlight, so they reflect very little back. Some are billions of kilometres away, in a region called the Kuiper Belt.
Better Telescopes
Step two: better tools. Giant telescopes and sensitive cameras can now spot much fainter objects. Computers help by comparing pictures of the same patch of sky.
Clever Tricks
Step three: clever clues. Astronomers look for dots that slowly move against the background stars. They also watch for a faint object passing in front of a star, making a tiny shadow.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at how we find them! Telescopes collect more faint light. Cameras take photos of the same spot, night after night. A dim dot that moves is a new object! Each find adds to our map of the solar system!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Pluto was discovered in 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh. Eris, a dwarf planet, was found in 2005. Eris is named after a Greek goddess of arguments. Stargaze with a grown-up, and never point a telescope at the Sun.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, search for Kuiper Belt object discoveries. Look for ones found in recent years. Write down the names you find. What would you name a new world?
