Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is the Sun’s surface speckled with sunspots?

The Big Idea

The Sun's surface is speckled with sunspots, which are patches where magnetic knots make the surface cooler. So those patches look darker than their surroundings. Sunspot numbers rise and fall in about an 11-year cycle. Dark spots are still blazing hot!

Magnetic Knots

Step one: magnetic knots. The Sun is made of hot, charged gas that flows and twists its magnetic field. Sometimes the field bunches into strong knots poking through the surface.

Cooler Patches

Step two: cooler patches. These knots block some of the heat rising from inside the Sun. A sunspot is about 3,500 degrees Celsius, cooler than the 5,500 degrees around it, so it looks dark.

The 11 Year Cycle

Step three: a cycle. The number of sunspots rises and falls over about 11 years. When there are lots of spots, the Sun is more active and can cause bright auroras on Earth.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a sunspot! Strong magnetic fields poke through the surface. The patch becomes cooler than its surroundings. Cooler glows less brightly, so it looks dark. But a sunspot is still blazing hot!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some sunspots are bigger than Earth. Galileo and others drew sunspots over 400 years ago. Sunspots help scientists track the Sun's moods. Never look at the Sun without a safe solar filter.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Never take a picture of the Sun without a safe solar filter. Never look at it directly, and never use a telescope or binoculars. Instead, ask a grown-up to help you find sunspot photos from space telescopes. Safe science is the best science!

Outro

Sunspots are cool patches on a hot star. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
