Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are Uranus and Neptune called ice giants?

The Big Idea

Uranus and Neptune are called ice giants because they hold lots of water, ammonia, and methane, which astronomers call ices, mixed in with gases! That's a different recipe from Jupiter and Saturn. Ice giant means chilly chemistry, not ice cubes!

Gas Giants

Step one: gas giants. Jupiter and Saturn are made mostly of hydrogen and helium, the lightest gases. They have only a small core of heavier stuff. That's why they're called gas giants.

Ice Giants

Step two: ice giants. Uranus and Neptune have much more of the heavier ingredients, such as water, ammonia, and methane. Astronomers call those ingredients ices, because they freeze in the cold of space.

Not Ice Cubes

Step three: it's not like an ice cube. Deep inside, the pressure is huge and the temperature is hot, so the ices form a thick fluid. The blue color comes from methane gas in the atmosphere, which soaks up red light and lets blue light bounce back.

A Closer Look

Let's sort the planets! Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are rocky. Jupiter and Saturn are gas giants. Uranus and Neptune are ice giants. And methane gas gives them a lovely blue-green color!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Uranus is about 4 times wider than Earth. Neptune has the fastest winds in the solar system. Only one spacecraft, Voyager 2, has visited both. Neptune takes about 165 Earth years to orbit the Sun.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Sort the eight planets into three groups. Rocky, gas giant, and ice giant. Draw a chart with three boxes, and write the names inside. Which group has the most planets?

Outro

Ice giants are chilly and blue. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
