Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do Mars rovers need tough wheels and brains?

The Big Idea

Mars rovers need tough wheels and clever brains because Mars is rocky, sandy, and cold. Plus, radio messages from Earth take a long time to arrive! So rovers must roll carefully and make some choices on their own. Robots are our remote explorers, working far from home!

Rough Ground

Step one: rough ground. Mars is covered with sharp rocks, soft sand, and steep slopes. The rover Perseverance has strong metal wheels, so it can roll over bumps without breaking.

Cold and Dusty

Step two: cold and dust. Mars can be as cold as minus 70 degrees Celsius at night. Rovers carry heaters and strong power sources to keep working.

Slow Messages

Step three: a delay in messages. A radio signal can take between 3 and 22 minutes to travel one way between Earth and Mars. So rovers use onboard computers to avoid rocks and cliffs by themselves. They can't wait for instructions every moment.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a rover! Tough wheels roll over rocks. Cameras are the rover's eyes, and they take amazing photos. A smart computer helps it choose a safe path. An antenna sends pictures and data back to Earth!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Perseverance is about the size of a small car. A tiny helicopter named Ingenuity flew on Mars. Rovers have collected rock samples for scientists. Curiosity, another rover, has been exploring since 2012.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Design your own rover. Will you add a scoop, a camera, or a weather station? Draw it and label each part. What would you explore first?
