Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why must you never stare at the Sun?

The Big Idea

Never stare at the Sun, because sunlight can permanently damage your eyes! It's so bright and strong that it can hurt the delicate parts at the back of your eye. Even a quick look can do harm. Eye safety beats any selfie!

Too Bright

Step one: sunlight is super strong. Your eye works like a magnifying glass, focusing light onto the retina at the back. With the Sun, all that focused light can burn the retina, and it doesn't hurt while it happens.

Eclipses Too

Step two: eclipses are no exception. During a solar eclipse, the Moon covers part of the Sun, but the uncovered part is still dangerously bright. Regular sunglasses are not safe enough!

Safe Ways

Step three: use safe methods. You can use certified eclipse glasses, made just for looking at the Sun, with a grown-up. Or make a pinhole projector, and look at the shadow instead of the Sun.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at safe viewing! Certified eclipse glasses block almost all the Sun's light. A pinhole projector lets you see a Sun picture on paper. Always have a grown-up check your gear. Never use bare eyes, binoculars, or telescopes on the Sun!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Sunglasses are not enough to look at the Sun. Look for the I S O safety label on eclipse glasses. Throw away glasses that are scratched or torn. Never look at the Sun through binoculars or a telescope.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Learn one safe way to view the Sun. Ask a grown-up to help you pick projection or certified glasses. Then share what you learned with a friend. Remember, never stare at the Sun!
