Why Is There Almost No Weather on the Moon?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is there almost no weather on the Moon?

The Big Idea

There is almost no weather on the Moon because it has almost no air! The Moon's gravity is too weak to hold a thick atmosphere, so there is no wind, rain, or clouds, only silent, dusty stillness. No air blanket means no weather show!

Weak Gravity

Step one: gravity is weak. The Moon is much smaller than Earth, so its gravity is only about one-sixth as strong. That's not enough to hold on to a thick layer of air.

No Air

Step two: almost no air. Any gases escape into space, so only a tiny, thin wisp remains, so thin that it is almost nothing. Weather needs air to move around, and the Moon doesn't have any.

No Weather

Step three: no weather. With no air, there can be no wind, rain, snow, or clouds. Footprints can stay for millions of years, because nothing blows them away.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The Moon's gravity is weak. So it can't keep a real atmosphere. Without air, there is no weather. And the daytime sky looks black, even with the Sun out.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The Moon's gravity is about one-sixth of Earth's. The sky on the Moon is black even in the daytime. There is no sound on the Moon, because sound needs air. Never look at the Sun, even on a sunny day.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! List three Earth weather things the Moon can't have. Try wind, rain, and clouds. What else can you think of? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
