Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are there two high tides a day, not one?
The Big Idea
Most coasts get two high tides a day because the Moon stretches the ocean into two bulges! The Moon pulls hardest on the nearest ocean, less on Earth, and least on the far ocean. That stretches the sea into two bulges. As Earth spins, your coast passes through both.
A Pull on the Near Side
Step one: the Moon pulls hardest on the nearest ocean. Gravity gets weaker with distance, so the water facing the Moon feels the strongest tug. It piles up in a bulge. That's one high tide.
A Bulge on the Far Side
Step two: the far ocean bulges too. The Moon pulls the solid Earth a little harder than it pulls the far ocean, so the far water gets left behind and bulges out the other way. That makes a second bulge.
Earth Spins Through
Step three: Earth spins through both bulges. Your coast rides through one bulge, then the other, in about a day. That gives most places two high tides and two low tides. Tides are long, slow waves pulled by gravity.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The Moon pulls the closest water into a bulge. Earth sits in the middle. The far water bulges the other way. As Earth spins, coasts pass through both.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Most coasts have two high tides a day. Some places have just one. The Sun pulls on the ocean too. Check a tide table before a beach walk.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Look up today's high-tide times for a nearby coast or bay. Count how many highs there are. Are they about twelve hours apart? Show a grown-up what you found.

Two bulges, one spinning Earth, and the tides roll in and out. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
