Why Does the Moon Rise and Set?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does the Moon rise and set?

The Big Idea

The Moon rises and sets because Earth rotates! As our planet turns, the Moon seems to climb up, drift across the sky, and sink down, just like the Sun, but on its own schedule. Moon motion is mostly Earth's spin show!

Earth Spins

Step one: Earth spins. Earth turns all the way around once every 24 hours. It spins from west to east, like a giant ball on a stick, and we ride along on it without feeling a thing.

Sky Appears to Move

Step two: the sky seems to move. As we turn, the Moon seems to rise over the eastern horizon. It climbs across the sky, and then sinks in the west, the same way the Sun does.

Its Own Schedule

Step three: its own timing. The Moon also slowly moves in its orbit, so it doesn't rise at the same time as the Sun. Some days it rises at night, and some days in the afternoon.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Earth keeps spinning. The Moon peeks over the eastern horizon. It climbs across the sky. Then it sinks below the western horizon.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The Moon rises in the east and sets in the west. The Moon can be up in the daytime, too. A full Moon rises around sunset, and a new Moon rises with the Sun. Moon watch with a grown-up, and never look at the Sun.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look up moonrise time for tonight. Then check it again tomorrow. It shifts later each day! Can you tell why? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
