Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do galaxies look like spirals, ovals, or blobs?
The Big Idea
Galaxies have different shapes because gravity, spin, and collisions shape them over billions of years! Spirals have arms full of young stars, while ellipticals look smoother and rounder. A galaxy's shape tells a long cosmic story!
Spirals
Step one: spiral galaxies. Spirals spin slowly like a pinwheel, with a flat disk and curving arms. Their arms are full of gas, dust, and young bright stars, which makes them glow blue and bright.
Ellipticals
Step two: elliptical galaxies. Ellipticals are smooth balls or ovals of mostly older stars. They have little gas left to make new stars, so they look yellow and calm. Some are giants with a trillion stars.
Collisions
Step three: galaxies can collide. Over billions of years, galaxies can pass close and even merge together. Collisions can stir them into blobs or ovals, with no clear shape. These crashes are very slow, and the stars rarely hit one another.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Spirals have arms of young stars. Ellipticals are smooth and round. Collisions can mix galaxies together. Some end up as irregular blobs.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Our Milky Way is a spiral galaxy. The Andromeda Galaxy is our nearest big neighbour, a spiral too. In about 4 billion years, the two will start to merge. Never look at the Sun to compare brightness.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, find pictures of a spiral galaxy and an elliptical galaxy. Spot the differences. Which one looks smoother? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
