Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is sunscreen still useful on cloudy days?

The Big Idea

A gray, cloudy day can fool you into thinking you cannot get sunburned. Clouds block some light, but a lot of the invisible UV rays can still get through. Sunscreen still protects your skin, and that is why it is smart on bright, overcast days!

UV Is Invisible

Step one: UV is invisible. Sunlight carries ultraviolet rays that you cannot see or feel. They are different from the warm feeling of the Sun.

Clouds Let UV In

Step two: clouds let UV in. Thick clouds block more, but thin or broken clouds can let through up to about 80 percent of UV. So you can burn on a hazy day.

Sunscreen Helps

Step three: sunscreen helps. A grown-up can help you put on broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Then reapply about every two hours, and after swimming.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at UV on a cloudy day! UV rays travel with sunlight. They let lots of UV pass. It blocks and absorbs UV. Extra protection for your skin. Hats, shade, and sunglasses help too, and every layer of protection makes a difference. Even on a foggy or rainy day, the sky can still send UV your way. A good habit is to check the UV index in the forecast, and use sunscreen whenever it is three or higher.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Clouds block some UV rays, but not all. Use SPF 30 or higher. Reapply sunscreen about every two hours. Sand, water, and snow reflect UV, so you get extra.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Let's protect our skin. Choose SPF 30 or higher with a grown-up. Put it on before park or beach time. Reapply every two hours. Add a hat and shade breaks.

Outro

UV sneaks through gray skies, so sunscreen is smart every day. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
