Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are forecasts better for tomorrow than next month?

The Big Idea

A forecast for tomorrow is usually very good, but a forecast for next month is mostly a guess. The atmosphere is chaotic, so tiny errors in our measurements grow bigger as time goes by. That is why forecasts are best for the near future!

Measure Today

Step one: measure today. Forecasters collect measurements of temperature, wind, and moisture from all around the world. Computers use them as a starting point.

Tiny Errors Grow

Step two: tiny errors grow. No measurement is perfect, and the air is always swirling and changing. Small errors grow bigger and bigger each day we look ahead.

Maybe Ranges Widen

Step three: the maybe range widens. A forecast for tomorrow is clear, but a forecast for ten days from now has a wider maybe. Next month, we can only say what the season will probably feel like.

A Closer Look

Let's compare forecasts for different days! Very reliable and very detailed. Still good, but less sure. A rough idea, with a lot of maybe. Only a general trend, not the daily weather. Please remember, a forecast is a smart guess, not a promise. Scientists say a five-day forecast is right about nine times out of ten, and a ten-day forecast is right about half the time.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Tiny changes can grow into big differences in the weather. Tomorrow's forecast is very reliable. Forecasts get less sure each day ahead. Forecasters update their forecasts again and again.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Let's test forecasts, because testing is how scientists learn what to trust. Compare a one-day and a ten-day forecast. Write both forecasts in a notebook. See which forecast came true. Which forecast could you trust the most?

Outro

The nearer the day, the surer the forecast. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
