Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does glass make light bend?
The Big Idea
Look through a glass of water, and a straw can seem broken or bent! Light slows down when it travels into glass or water. That change in speed bends its path, and that is why glass makes light bend!
Light Slows Down
Step one: light slows down. Light is the fastest thing around, but it travels more slowly through glass than through air. Glass is like thick syrup for light.
The Path Bends
Step two: the path bends. When a beam hits glass at a slant, one side slows down first. That makes the whole beam swing, like a shopping cart rolling from pavement onto grass.
Lenses Use It
Step three: lenses use the bend. Curved glass bends light toward one spot, so we can focus it. That is how magnifying glasses, eyeglasses, and cameras work!
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at light and glass! A beam of light travels through air. Inside glass or water, the light slows down. The slowdown makes the beam turn. Curved glass uses the bend to focus. We call this bending of light refraction. It happens whenever light crosses from one clear material into another, like from air into water. That is also why a swimming pool looks shallower than it really is, so always have a grown-up nearby when you are near water.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Light is slower in glass than in air. Bending light is called refraction. Eyeglasses bend light to help people see clearly. Telescopes and microscopes use glass lenses too.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Let's catch bending light. Fill a clear glass with water. Put a straw in, and look from the side. The straw seems to bend or break. Tell a friend why, using the word refraction.
Outro
Glass bends light by slowing it down. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
