Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do oil slicks shimmer like tiny rainbows?
The Big Idea
Oil slicks shimmer like tiny rainbows because a very thin layer of oil on water works like a bubble wall. Light bounces off the top and bottom of the oil film, and the waves interfere. Those are mini rainbows in parking-lot puddles!
Oil Floats
Step one: oil floats. Oil is lighter than water and doesn't mix with it, so it spreads out on top of a puddle. It forms a very thin film.
Light Bounces Twice
Step two: light bounces off both sides. Some light reflects from the top of the oil, and some goes through and reflects from the water below. The two reflected waves overlap.
Colors Appear
Step three: colors appear. Where the oil is a certain thickness, some colors cancel out and others get brighter. Because the thickness varies, you see swirls of rainbow colors.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at an oil film! Sunlight shines down onto the puddle. The thin oil film reflects some of it. The water below reflects some more. Together, they make rainbow swirls.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! It's the same science as a soap bubble. The colors shift as you move, because the angle of light changes. A shimmer on a puddle usually means oil or fuel got there. That's pollution, not a rainbow treat. Don't touch it. Tell a grown-up and wash hands if you do.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Let's spot some thin-film colors. On a sunny day, look for a shimmering puddle in a parking lot. Look only. Never touch oil or chemicals. Move your head. Do the colors change? Stay out of the road!
