Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do volcanoes temporarily cool the planet?

The Big Idea

Big volcanic eruptions can cool the planet for a while because they launch tiny particles high into the sky. Those particles reflect some sunlight back to space, like a planetary sunscreen. The cooling lasts a year or two, then fades.

A Huge Eruption

Step one: a giant eruption. A really big volcano blasts ash and gases, including sulfur dioxide, high up into the stratosphere. That's far above the clouds and weather.

Tiny Droplets Form

Step two: tiny droplets form. The sulfur gas combines with water to make microscopic droplets, called aerosols, that spread around the world. They form a thin, hazy veil.

Sunlight Bounces

Step three: the veil reflects sunlight. Some sunlight bounces back to space, so less reaches the surface and Earth cools slightly. After a year or two, the droplets fall out of the sky.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a volcanic veil! The eruption launches gas high into the sky. The gas turns into a thin haze of droplets. That haze reflects some sunlight back to space. The result is a little cooler Earth for a while.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! In 1991, Mount Pinatubo erupted, and Earth cooled by about half a degree Celsius. In 1816, after a huge eruption in Indonesia, much of North America and Europe had a cold summer. People call it the year without a summer. Volcanoes are dangerous. Never go near one.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Let's travel back in time. With a grown-up, read about 1816, the year without a summer. What happened to crops and weather? Why was the cooling temporary? Volcano fun is for books only!

Outro

Volcanoes can dim the Sun for a little while. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
