Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do bears and other animals slow down in winter?
The Big Idea
Bears and other animals slow down in winter because food is scarce and cold weather costs a lot of energy. Slowing the body down saves energy, so they can survive until spring. Rest is a survival strategy!
Eat Extra
Step one: eat extra in autumn. Before winter, bears eat huge meals of berries, nuts, and fish. Their bodies store the energy as thick layers of fat.
Find a Safe Den
Step two: find a shelter. Animals settle into a den, a burrow, or a hollow log, out of the wind and snow. Wild animals should be left alone, so give dens lots of space.
Slow Down
Step three: the body slows down. A bear's heart beats much slower, and it uses its stored fat for energy. Smaller animals, like ground squirrels and bats, drop their body temperature a lot and truly hibernate.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at winter rest! Animals eat extra food in autumn. Then they find a safe den. Their heartbeat and breathing slow down. When spring brings food again, they wake up.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Bears sleep deeply in winter, but they are not frozen. They can wake up if disturbed. Mother bears often have their cubs inside the den, in mid-winter. Ground squirrels and bats can lower their body temperature to near freezing! If you see a den or a sleeping animal, don't go near it. Tell a grown-up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Let's learn about winter sleepers. Read one book or article about hibernation with a grown-up. Which animal slows down the most? How do they save energy? Always watch wildlife from far away.
