Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does snow cover keep the ground insulated?

The Big Idea

Snow keeps the ground insulated because fluffy snow traps lots of tiny pockets of air. Air is a poor conductor of heat, so a snow blanket slows heat from escaping the soil. Snow can tuck the ground in for winter!

Snow Traps Air

Step one: snow traps air. Fresh snow is mostly air. Between the flakes there are countless tiny gaps filled with air. Those pockets slow down the movement of heat.

Heat Stays In

Step two: heat stays in the soil. The ground holds some warmth from summer and autumn, and the snow blanket keeps it from escaping quickly. It works like the insulation in a winter coat.

Life Stays Safe

Step three: life stays safe underneath. Under the snow, plant roots, insects, and small animals like mice stay much warmer than the air above. Without snow, soil can freeze much deeper.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look under the snow! Above the snow the air can be freezing. The snow blanket traps air and slows heat loss. The soil underneath stays warmer. And small animals stay snug in tunnels, below the surface.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Fresh snow can be up to 90 percent air. Igloos work for the same reason. Packed snow keeps the warmth inside. Small animals tunnel under the snow, in a space called the subnivean zone. Stay off frozen lakes and ice. Ask a grown-up before you play near them.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Let's compare temperatures. With a grown-up, push a thermometer into the snow and note the reading. Then check the air temperature above the snow. Which is warmer? Dress warmly, and don't stay out too long! Stay away from roads and ice.

Outro

A snowy blanket keeps the ground cozy all winter. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
