Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does the Sun feel stronger at noon?

The Big Idea

The Sun feels stronger around noon because it is at its highest point in the sky. When the Sun is high, its light takes a shorter path through the air, so less light is lost along the way. More of it reaches you, and it feels punchier!

Sun Climbs High

Step one: the Sun climbs high. As Earth turns, the Sun climbs to its highest point around midday, then sinks again. That peak is what we call noon.

Shorter Path

Step two: the light takes a shorter path. Overhead, sunbeams cut through the thinnest layer of air. Low in the sky, they slide through much more. Air scatters some light, so a long path weakens it.

Rays Hit Straight

Step three: rays hit more directly. A high Sun shines almost straight down, so its energy is packed into a small spot instead of spread out. That makes noon sunshine feel strong.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the Sun's trip! In the morning the Sun is low, so light has a long path. At noon the Sun is high, so light feels strongest. A high Sun also makes the shortest shadows. By evening the Sun is low again, and gentle.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Shadows are shortest around midday. Ultraviolet light, which causes sunburn, is strongest near noon. Still, the hottest time is usually mid-afternoon, because the ground keeps heating up! On sunny days, wear a hat and sunscreen, and rest in the shade.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Let's track a shadow. Stand a toy outside and trace its shadow with chalk in the morning. Trace it again at midday. Which shadow is shorter? Why do you think that is? And remember, never look straight at the Sun.

Outro

A high Sun means short shadows and strong rays. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
