Intro

Hi there, forecast fans! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do weather apps show different numbers?

The Big Idea

Two weather apps can show different numbers for the same time and place. That is because they can use different computer models, different weather stations, and different update times. A forecast is an educated estimate, not magic.

Different Models

Step one: different models. Computer weather models are like different recipes. They all use the same ingredients but give slightly different results. Different apps may blend or pick different models.

Different Stations

Step two: different stations. Apps may use different weather stations, like an airport or a spot downtown. A few kilometers can mean a different temperature.

Different Timing

Step three: different timing. One app may have updated a few minutes ago, and another an hour ago. Weather changes, so fresh data can look different.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at why numbers differ! The model is the computer forecast. The station is where the measurement was taken. And the time is when the app last updated.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A forecast is a well-informed guess, not a promise. Forecasts for the next few hours are usually more accurate than forecasts for next week. A 40 percent chance of rain is the likelihood of rain, not how long or how hard it will rain. Weather changes, so check again for the latest update, especially if storms are possible.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, open two different weather apps. Look at the temperature for the same hour. Write down the numbers and compare them. Then ask: which of the three reasons could explain the difference?
