Intro

Hey, wind watchers! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do anemometers spin?

The Big Idea

An anemometer is a tool that measures how fast the wind is blowing. A common kind has three or four little cups on arms. The wind catches the cups and makes them spin. The faster it spins, the faster the wind.

Wind Catches the Cups

Step one: wind catches the cups. Each cup is open on one side and rounded on the other. The open side catches more wind than the round side. That uneven push makes the cups turn.

The Cups Spin

Step two: the cups spin. The cups spin around a pole, and stronger wind makes them whirl faster. Light winds make them turn slowly.

Spin Becomes a Number

Step three: the spin becomes a number. A sensor counts how many times the cups turn each second, and changes it into a wind speed. Weather stations use that number in forecasts.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at an anemometer! The cups catch the wind. The arms hold the cups out wide. And the post in the middle lets everything spin freely.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Many anemometers have three cups, and some have four. The faster the wind, the more spins per second. Weather stations place them up high in open places, so buildings and trees do not block the wind. A slow-motion video can show how the cups catch the wind.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, watch an anemometer video in slow motion. See how the open side of each cup catches the wind. Try counting how many turns happen in 10 seconds. Ask: what happens to the spin if the wind gets faster?

Outro

An anemometer's spin tells us how fast the wind blows. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
