Intro

Hello, map detectives! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do fronts look like triangles and semicircles?

The Big Idea

A front is the boundary between two different air masses, one cold and one warm. On weather maps, fronts are drawn with a line and little shapes. Cold fronts get blue triangles, and warm fronts get red half circles. It is a shared drawing code, so people can read maps fast.

Cold Front: Triangles

Step one: cold fronts use triangles. A cold front is drawn as a blue line with sharp, pointy triangles. The triangles look like icy teeth, and they point the way the cold air is moving.

Warm Front: Bumps

Step two: warm fronts use bumps. A warm front is drawn as a red line with round half circles, like little suns peeking up. The bumps point the way the warm air is moving.

Read the Map

Step three: read the map. Look at which side the shapes are on. They show the direction the front is moving. Other fronts have other symbols, like purple for an occluded front.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the front symbols! Blue triangles mark a cold front. Red half circles mark a warm front. And the shapes always point in the direction of the front's move.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Cold fronts are blue lines with triangles. Warm fronts are red lines with half circles. Other front types have other symbols. An occluded front is often purple. These shapes let anyone read a map quickly, even without the words.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Memorize the code: triangles cold, bumps warm. Draw a front with blue triangles on a piece of paper. Draw another front with red half circles. Then quiz a friend or family member.

Outro

Triangles mean cold and bumps mean warm. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
