Why Does Wind Have Directions Like North and West?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hello, explorers! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does wind have directions like north and west?

The Big Idea

We name wind by where it comes from, not where it is going. A north wind blows from the north toward the south. It is like labeling a letter with the sender's address, not the address it is delivered to.

Find the Compass Points

Step one: find the directions. A compass shows the four main directions: north, east, south, and west. Weather experts also use in-between names like northwest.

Face the Wind

Step two: face the wind. Stand so the wind blows right into your face. You are now looking toward the direction it comes from. Check that direction on a compass.

Name It

Step three: name the wind. If the wind is coming from the west, it is a west wind, and it blows toward the east. So a west wind pushes weather eastward.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at wind names! A north wind comes from the north. A west wind comes from the west. And an east wind comes from the east.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Wind names tell you where the wind comes from. A west wind blows toward the east. A flag points away from the wind's source, in the direction the air is going. A compass app can help you name today's wind direction.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, open a compass app outside. Face into the wind, and see which direction you are looking. Name today's wind, like a south wind or an east wind. Remember: it is named by where it comes from, not toward.

Wind is named for where it comes from. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
